Sanam Maroufkhani is an Iranian singer-songwriter, composer and pianist, born in Tehran and based in Amsterdam. Persian lyrics and piano are central to her work. She describes her music as bringing influences from Southwest Asia and North Africa into Western alternative pop; recurring piano patterns and an interest in minimalism also inform her compositions.671
Born in Tehran in 1996–97 (1375 in the Solar Hijri calendar), Maroufkhani recalls sixteen as the age when music became a serious pursuit. Her account of those beginnings includes several years of classical playing, harmony and musical analysis.6 Her recollections in روایتهای خیابان (Street Narratives), part of Saba Zavarei’s Radio Khiaban project, bring that early period into closer view. She recalls having her family’s encouragement and remembers singing on a school trip at seventeen, with the pupils seated and quietened so that she and her companions could sing. In a separate recollection, she describes a concert with her band at twenty: they performed several of her own pieces alongside covers.8
Both songwriting and reinterpretation appear in her recorded work. Her Kavire Del is a cover of Marjan’s song; on Nahan, she sings and plays piano with Peyman Salimi. Ahmad Wali wrote the original music and lyrics of Nahan, which Salimi rearranged for this recording.69

Life & work
Three songs in one evening
For When You Left Home, released in June 2023, Maroufkhani took on production and arrangement as well as songwriting and singing. She dedicated it to Iranians who had sacrificed their youth for freedom, adding the words “Woman. Life. Freedom.”1011
On 23 September that year, she performed the song at Let Her Sing at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. An official video published by the organizer preserves that performance.1213 She also sang White Oaks that evening. A report from San Francisco State University’s Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies describes it as a song inspired by Amsterdam’s canals, telling a love story between two women.14
The same set included The Poem From This Port, featuring Emma, a live performance that preceded the studio release in 2024.1315 The studio recording credits Maroufkhani’s music and lyrics, with production by Marc Sarrià.156 In a 2024 review, Kaveh Roshangar emphasized the piano’s leading role in the piece and placed it close to contemporary art pop and art rock.6
Writing and recording with others
Airplanes is Sanam Maroufkhani’s own song. On the solo recording, she is credited as singer-songwriter, with music production by Mohammad Shariat.16 A rendition with Makan Ashgvari was also shared on SoundCloud. For that version, Maroufkhani and Ashgvari share the performance and lyric credits, while the songwriting credit remains Maroufkhani’s.17
Her work with Marc Sarrià spans several recordings. My Comrade Sings is jointly billed to the two artists, with Maroufkhani credited for composition and lyrics and Sarrià for production and arrangement.1819 On Mirror for the Sun, released in December 2025, she wrote the music and lyrics, sings, and plays guitar and piano. Sarrià also plays piano and produced the recording.207
Her voice also appears in other artists’ work. She is the featured artist on Jetpack’s Noghteh Ha, and sings on Women of Fire from Saba Alizadeh’s Temple of Hope, released in January 2025.2122
Her quartet, Mahala and a live recording from Vienna
On 1 April 2026, Maroufkhani opened Printemps du Jazz Persan at La Seine Musicale. In her account of the concert, Hanna Kay reports Maroufkhani describing it as her first appearance on a Paris stage.23
In Amsterdam, Nachtzon / Night Sun brought two aspects of her ensemble work into the same evening. At the Zonnehuis on 11 May 2026, she performed with her quartet and also sang lead with Mahala. The concert formed part of Maydays, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam Pop Department’s annual exam festival; the venue presented it as her graduation concert.242526
In Mahala’s own account, its members met at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and bring music from Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) and the Balkans together with Western fusion pop.27 Maroufkhani’s work with the band is also documented in Tilburg: an October 2026 VPRO 3voor12 report describes her singing and playing piano during Mahala’s set at Kim’s Kroeg for Popronde.28
Beneath the Wooden Roof preserves another ensemble collaboration. Recorded live at Vienna’s Sargfabrik, it was released on 17 October 2026. Maroufkhani wrote the lyrics and shares composition with Avin Ahmadi and Reza Tavakoli. Her voice and Ahmadi’s are accompanied by oud, piano, double bass and percussion.29 This work, too, is dedicated to young people who gave their lives for a free Iran. Alongside When You Left Home, the dedication documents remembrance as a concern expressed in more than one of her works.2911
Film, installation and orchestra
Some of Maroufkhani’s work is documented through moving images. The Huesca film festival catalogue names her in the music credits for Elahe Esmaili’s documentary Arousak / The Doll.30 In 2026, she was among the singers recorded on video for Unfolded Voices at Dutch National Opera & Ballet. The installation was programmed for Studio Boekman from 25 July to 8 August.31
On 26 September 2026, she performed her composition Indigo Valley in Female Voices of Resilience at Kölner Philharmonie, in an arrangement by Justus Berger.3233 The programme note describes the work as being about an inner refuge and names kintsugi—the Japanese practice of repairing broken ceramics with gold—as its inspiration.34
